SportsControl® Creatine Recovery is a creatine supplement combined with a high-quality, high-calorie recovery drink (374 kcal per 750 ml) with a base of carbohydrates, hydrolysed proteins and whey proteins. This combination is highly useful as it has been proven that intake of creatine in combination with carbohydrates and proteins, in order to stimulate insulin response, enhances creatine absorption into the muscles. The detailed composition of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery is specified in the table below.
Composition per 750 ml of solution
| Maltodextrin | 45 g |
| Dextrose | 25 g |
| Ultra Whey | 13 g |
| PeptoPro® | 12 g |
| Creapure® | 35 g |
| Flavouring | 4 g |
One dose of 750ml of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery provides 2.64 grams of creatine in the form of 3 grams of creatine monohydrate. Creatine is a natural substance derived from guanidine and is synthesized in the body from the amino acids arginine, glycine and methionine. Creatine is found in very high concentrations in the muscles, particularly in the form of phosphocreatine which plays an important role in muscle energy metabolism. Moreover, a considerable amount of creatine is absorbed from normal food: meat and fish in particular contain 3 to 7 grams of creatine per kg. Due to a lack of creatine intake through food, vegetarians generally have lower creatine concentrations in the muscles than the average population. Synthetic creatine monohydrate is produced from cyanamide and sarcosine. The synthetic creatine monohydrate used in SportsControl® Creatine Recovery is 100% Creapure® (www.creapure.com) and meets the most stringent quality requirements. Oral intake of creatine increases the concentration of creatine, both free creatine and phosphocreatine, in the muscles. However, response varies significantly from individual to individual. People with a low concentration of natural creatine in the muscles, such as vegetarians, show a sharper increase in creatine content in the muscles after oral creatine supplementation than those with a high concentration of natural creatine. Intake of creatine can enhance the rate of ATP conversion and phosphocreatine resynthesis in the muscles, as well as accelerate muscle relaxation after contraction through an increase in creatine concentration in the muscle fibres. Moreover, creatine intake has been proven to stimulate a number of intracellular signal mechanisms that are important for protein synthesis in the muscle cells as well as to activate satellite cells, which play an important role in the regeneration and anabolism of muscular tissue.
In addition to 3 grams of Creapure® , one dose (750ml) of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery also provides a total of 70 grams of carbohydrates of which 64% consists of maltodextrin and 36% of glucose. This high dose of carbohydrates is combined with a dose of high-quality proteins (25 grams) of which 48% comes in the form of the patented PeptoPro® . (see www.dsm.com/le/nl_NL/sport/html/peptopro_center.htm). PeptoPro® is an enzymatically hydrolysed milk protein derived from casein. The intake of proteins in a hydrolysed form ensures rapid absorption of amino acids into the body. Moreover, thanks to its mix of PeptoPro® and high-quality whey proteins, SportsControl® Recovery contains an optimal dose of amino acids. The combination of maltodextrin, glucose, PeptoPro® and whey protein generates a sharp increase in insulin secretion after exercise. Insulin plays a key role in stimulating glycogen formation as well as protein synthesis in the muscles after exercise, and is a crucial element in enhancing the recovery process.
Use:
SportsControl® Creatine Recovery is first of all a creatine supplement, which should thus be used within the context of a period of creatine supplementation, and not as ‘standard’ recovery drink for all kinds of applications. Consequently, the uses of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery largely correspond to those of SportsControl® Creatine Tabs. Sportsmen who are going through a creatine loading phase can take creatine after intensive training by means of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery. On days without intensive training, or rest days, we recommend to use SportsControl® Creatine Tabs (3 to 5 tablets at once per day) in order to reduce calorie intake and avoid an undesirable increase in body weight. During a period of creatine loading, the use of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery can be alternated at one’s own discretion with SportsControl® Creatine Tabs in function of the training planning.
Sports
The increase in creatine content in the muscles involves an improvement in physical performance capacity, especially during short intensive exercises, and more in particular when these are performed according to an interval pattern, such as is the case with interval sprint training. It has also been shown that creatine intake during a period of intensive power training can enhance the effects of such training on muscular strength and muscle mass. This effect is partly achieved as a result of improved training quality. Creatine intake does not have any positive effects on aerobic endurance, i.e. on endurance performance. Oral intake of creatine is mainly applied within the context of performances in which muscular strength, speed and explosiveness are involved, rather than in endurance sports. Acute creatine intake does not have any beneficial effects.
Rehabilitation
The effects of creatine on muscle mass and muscular strength during power training also apply in the field of rehabilitation of sports injuries. However, due to the high energy content (374 kcal per dose) of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery, we recommend to use SportsControl® Creatine Tabs rather than SportsControl® Creatine Recovery within the context of rehabilitation training.
Responders and non-responders
Owing to the fact that the effect of creatine supplementation on muscle creatine concentration varies significantly between individuals, and that there are clearly ‘responders’ and ‘non-responders’, the impact of SportsControl® Creatine Recovery on performance capacity should always be individually assessed and in function of the specific sports discipline. Indeed, creatine intake often results in a significant increase in body weight as a consequence of fluid accumulation in the muscles. In some sports, this may even have a negative effect on performances. For that same reason, some sportsmen experience an increase in muscular tension and thus a decrease in muscle flexibility as a result of creatine intake.
Instructions for use:
Its convenient packaging (powder sachets of 100 grams for a 750ml solution) makes it very easy to rapidly obtain an ideal creatine supplement in the form of a recovery drink by adding one sachet to a bottle or ‘shaker’ with a volume of 750ml. It has been shown that the muscles are most susceptible to absorption of creatine supplement immediately after exercise. That is why SportsControl® CreatineRecovery should by definition be consumed after exercise, never before or during exercise. The ‘timing’ of intake is very important. Given that the muscles are also most susceptible to rapid absorption of glucose and amino acids as well as to their stimulation by insulin immediately after exercise, it is preferably to take SportsControl® Recovery straight after exercise, for example spread over the first 15 to 30min following exercise. The longer the interval between the end of the exercise and intake of the recovery drink, the smaller the impact on creatine absorption into the muscles and on muscle recovery. Creatine is taken on a daily base for a period of 8 to 10 weeks, whereupon intake is interrupted for at least 5 weeks prior to starting a new ‘loading phase’. Scientific studies indeed suggest that the beneficial effects of creatine intake disappear in case the periods of intake last longer than 10 weeks. Consequently, a ‘wash-out’ period of 5 weeks appears to be necessary so that creatine concentration in the muscles can return to its normal value, before starting a new ‘loading phase’. After having taken SportsControl® Recovery immediately after exercise, recovery can be further enhanced by using our other sports drinks SportsControl® 2Win and/or SportsControl® WinErgy. In the event of severe dehydration, we also recommend to use SportsControl® ORS4Sport.
